Advocacy & Policy Coordinator

TITLE: Education & Community Outreach Coordinator

DEPARTMENT: Education, Advocacy & Bridgebuilding (EAB)

REPORTS TO: EAB Manager

CLASSIFICATION: Part-Time/ Non-Exempt

STATUS/SCHEDULE: 25 hours or less

WAGE: $20/hour for 25 hours/week

PURPOSE:
The Advocacy & Policy Coordinator is a key member of the Education, Advocacy & Bridgebuilding Department, focusing on advocacy initiatives and community outreach with diverse immigrant communities. The Coordinator will work closely with the EAB Manager and other team members to ensure the effectiveness of FaithAction’s advocacy efforts in North Carolina. This role includes managing advocacy campaigns, assisting with the FaithAction ID Program, and contributing to the success of the BlueCross BlueShield (BCBS) Connecting Latino Communities to Advance Advocacy for Health Equity Grant. The position will also be responsible for supporting various community events and maintaining a strong advocacy presence in response to emerging legislative changes and immigration policies.

ACCOUNTABILITY:
The Advocacy & Policy Coordinator is supervised by and accountable to the Education, Advocacy and Bridge Building Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in political science, public policy, social work, human rights, or a related field, with a focus on immigration, social justice, or multicultural advocacy preferred. At least 2-3 years of experience in advocacy or policy work, particularly in areas related to immigration, human rights, or social justice, is required. Candidates should have a proven ability to work with immigrant and refugee communities, empowering them to engage in advocacy efforts. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English is essential, with strong verbal and written communication skills in both languages, allowing effective communication with diverse communities and across cultural barriers.

Candidates should also demonstrate experience in community organizing, outreach, and engagement, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with community partners, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies. Experience in facilitating workshops, trainings, and public presentations on social justice and advocacy topics is important. The candidate should be proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and social media platforms for advocacy and outreach. Familiarity with data management tools (e.g., SurveyMonkey) is preferred. The position will require a car to travel throughout North Carolina as needed – work events in the evenings and weekends, and may include occasional trips outside of the state. A strong passion for social justice, immigrant rights, and health equity. The ideal candidate will be deeply committed to empowering marginalized communities and advocating for meaningful policy change.

RELATIONSHIPS:
This position will work closely with the Education and Community Outreach Coordinator and the Immigrant Assistance Center staff to identify key opportunities for immigrant community outreach and education. This individual will also work alongside the EAB Manager to assist with FaithAction ID expansion and other advocacy initiatives. Particularly important community partnerships include: immigrant and refugee leaders, faith communities, social service agencies, schools, law enforcement, nonprofits, and local, state and national government representatives.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Advocacy & Policy Coordinator will:

Advocacy:

  • Support efforts to identify new and emerging policy trends, and align advocacy priorities with community needs, community members, and allies in our policy advocacy work.
  • Lead FaithAction’s advocacy initiatives, aligning priorities with community needs, including emerging policy trends such as immigration and other social justice-related issues.
  • Empower immigrant and refugee leaders, as well as community partners and volunteers, to speak out and take action alongside FaithAction on immigration and other social justice related issues.
  • Take responsibility for advocacy efforts in response to House bills and immigration policies, coordinating local responses to immigrant detention and deportation.
  • Participate in and represent FaithAction in social justice coalitions throughout North Carolina, including attending meetings, FIND group events, and community engagement events to promote agency services.
  • Visit detained clients alongside the FIND group, and help coordinate local responses to immigrant detention and deportation.

BCBS Connecting Latino Communities to Advance Advocacy for Health Equity Grant:

  • Assist with the implementation of the BCBS grant, focusing on community health fairs, survey collection, and developing advocacy strategies.
  • Support outreach efforts and coordinate activities related to health equity, including health clinics and the Community Health Worker Certification program.
  • Participate in BCBS grant monthly meetings and contribute to reporting and evaluation.
  • Collaborate with the Latino Health Equity Network to secure additional health resources and advocate for policy changes

FaithAction ID Network:

  • Support the EAB Manager in coordinating FaithAction ID Drives, ensuring successful outreach and participation.
  • Collaborate and co-facilitate on quarterly ID Network calls and lead with advocacy surrounding House Bills and the Driver’s License for All campaign.
  • Assist with expanding the ID program and engaging business partners at the national and local levels.

Community Bridge-Building:

  • Support the planning and execution of key community events, such as the annual Unity Walk and Multicultural Thanksgiving Dinner.
  • Assist in the coordination of Stranger to Neighbor (S2N) events, partnering with the Interfaith Program Manager and part-time education staff.
  • Represent FaithAction at community tabling events and other outreach activities, as needed.

Social Media and Newsletter:

  • Develop compelling content for the organization’s social media platforms, focusing on advocacy initiatives and outreach efforts.
  • Contribute to the monthly newsletter by providing advocacy-related updates and engaging stories that highlight the work of FaithAction.

Leadership and Support:

  • Work closely with the Interfaith Program Manager, part-time Education staff, and BCBS intern to ensure the alignment of advocacy and education efforts across the organization.
  • Provide support to the EAB Manager in overall advocacy initiatives, reporting, and strategy development.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Attend internal and external meetings as requested or required.
  • Maintain strong relationships with external collaborating partners, congregations, donors, and staff.
  • Regular attendance and accountability, with regard to work meetings and commitments.
  • Assist in fundraising efforts and help raise funds for organization – as needed.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Education:

  • Lead efforts to create and deliver educational materials and presentations in collaboration with the EAB Manager. Topics include navigating a new culture, community laws, resources, voting, immigrant rights, and more.
  • Deliver trainings to service providers on cultural competency and best practices for serving immigrant and refugee communities.
  • Expand the Stranger to Neighbor (S2N) Training program among community and faith-based organizations.

Serving Latinos Seminar:

  • Organize and lead the development of the “Serving Latinos” seminar for healthcare professionals, focusing on culturally competent care and best practices for serving the immigrant Latino population.
  • Collaborate with the EAB Manager and community partners to share local need assessments and deepen engagement with healthcare providers on local and state health issues.
  • Support efforts to generate revenue through the seminar to help sustain FaithAction’s community work and establish the organization as a key partner among health entities.
  • Assist in creating a platform for Latino healthcare professionals to share their expertise, fostering a collaborative learning environment.

FaithAction Newsletter:

  • Take responsibility for the creation of the monthly FaithAction Newsletter, collecting data and stories from the Leadership Team.
  • Plan and execute email marketing campaigns to engage current and new subscribers.
  • Maintain and update the subscriber list and develop strategies to grow the newsletter’s reach.

FaithAction ID Program:

  • Collaborate with the EAB Manager to support the expansion and deepening of the FaithAction Community ID program by managing relationships with community partners, allies, and business partners.
  • Develop outreach strategies to strengthen existing business partnerships and recruit new ID business partners at both local and national levels.

Community Bridge-Building:

  • Lead efforts in the planning and execution of community events such as the annual Unity Walk and Multicultural Thanksgiving Dinner.
  • Assist with outreach and program delivery at monthly FaithAction ID Drives, Stranger to Neighbor events, and community tabling events as needed.

BCBS Grant – Connecting Latino Communities to Advance Advocacy for Health Equity:

  • Assist in the planning and implementation of health equity-focused activities related to the BCBS grant, including health fairs and outreach efforts.
  • Contribute to the strategic planning and reporting requirements for the BCBS grant.

Leadership and Support:

  • Collaborate with the EAB Manager, Interfaith Program Manager, and other staff members to ensure alignment and successful execution of education and community outreach initiatives.
  • Provide support for internal meetings, external events, and organizational fundraising efforts.

Other Responsibilities:
